    • @inproceedings{Therkleson2010GingerCT, title={Ginger compress therapy for adults with osteoarthritis}, author={Tessa Therkleson}, booktitle={Journal of advanced nursing}, year={2010} } Abstract AIM This paper is a report of a study to explicate the phenomenon of ginger compresses for people with osteoarthritis. BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis is claimed to be the leading cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability in Western society. Management ideally combines non-pharmacological strategies, including complementary therapies and pain-relieving medication. Ginger has been applied externally for over a thousand years in China to manage arthritis symptoms. METHOD Husserlian phenomenological methodology was used and the data were collected in 2007. Ten purposively selected adults who had suffered osteoarthritis for at least a year kept daily diaries and made drawings, and follow-up interviews and telephone conversations were conducted. FINDINGS Seven themes were identified in the data: (1) Meditative-like stillness and relaxation of thoughts; (2) Constant penetrating warmth throughout the body; (3) Positive change in outlook; (4) Increased energy and interest in the world; (5) Deeply relaxed state that progressed to a gradual shift in pain and increased interest in others; (6) Increased suppleness within the body and (7) More comfortable, flexible joint mobility. The essential experience of ginger compresses exposed the unique qualities of heat, stimulation, anti-inflammation and analgesia. CONCLUSION Nurses could consider this therapy as part of a holistic treatment for people with osteoarthritis symptoms. Controlled research is needed with larger numbers of older people to explore further the effects of the ginger compress therapy. (Less) DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2648.2010.05355.x

    • Thanks for your post. It is unusual to have an increase in headaches reported after using IBT. Would it be possible to have an MRI scan to rule out anything that could be affecting circulation? Cluster headaches, migraine headaches have been reported as a positive experience with IBT. I used to have severe migraine headaches most of my life, possibly to having been knocked out a few times as a child, once when a branch, holding my brother and cousin snapped and fell on my head. Could you have had a concussion injury in the past?

    • For some time now I have been experiencing daily headaches. Sometimes so violent I had to take painkillers, often it woke me up in the night. The doctor run tests and scans and diagnosed me with cluster headaches. That is pretty serious, there is no cure and drugs are used to alleviate the symptoms. Then I said: Wait a minute, I have never had headaches in my life and is it not a coincidence that I started heaving "cluster headaches" when I inclined my bed? The day I put my bed back into horizontal position my headaches ended. I did not want it to be just a fluke so after a week or pain free horizontal sleeping I inclined it again, just 3 1/2" and even so the headache was back. I would like to get some of the benefits of IBT but in my case the price is too steep.
